Veronica
Veronica was initially assessed shortly after her 2nd birthday. She presented as a bright, lovable, interactive little girl who was experiencing frustration at her inability to communicate with others. Veronica received a diagnosis of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (moderate) and began SLP services immediately. Veronica’s speech sequencing was stimulated using Kaufman Apraxia workout techniques, and her expressive communication was augmented with Makaton signs, which her parents promoted in the home. After 18 months, Veronica was discharged from therapy services, evidencing average speech intelligibility and above average expressive language skills. She is currently enrolled in mainstream nursery where she is flourishing, and is very popular among her peers. Her mother recently shared a funny conversation she had with Veronica in the grocery store, in which she stated “Mommy, you’re so frustrating! You’re making all the decisions!”

Jason
Jason was initially assessed at 3 years of age, and was subsequently diagnosed with Mild Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Although verbal, Jason was reluctant to communicate with others, often refusing to speak or respond to requests, and sometimes resorted to whining or crying to make his needs known. He used primarily 1-2 word phrases, and much of his speech was scripted (i.e. delayed echolalia). At 5 years of age, Jason was discharged from therapy services, demonstrating age appropriate communication skills, as well as much improved thinking, reasoning and social skills. He attends a mainstream school, where he is following an advanced curriculum, as he presents with superior skills in math and literacy. He recently became a big brother and is responding to his new role very nicely.
