Applied Behavior Analysis
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the science of controlling and predicting human behavior. The main focus of ABA involves the observable relationship of behavior to the environment. By functionally assessing the relationship between a targeted behavior and the environment, the methods of ABA can be used to change that behavior.
Research shows that ABA-based interventions are amongst best practices for treating people with developmental disabilities, most notably Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). ABA is one of the key underlying principles of behavior treatment utilized at Stepping Stones where we utilize evidenced-based practices and treatment intervention with such populations.
Speech & Language Therapy
Stepping Stones offers Speech & Language Therapy by licensed speech and language pathologists who treat speech and communication disorders. Our speech therapists work as part of an educational team of providers in serving individuals with Autism spectrum disorders, speech and language delay or difficulties (e.g. stuttering) and other related developmental disorders. For an individual with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), speech and language therapy services are defined according to the individual’s needs and desired goals and priorities for participation. These services generally take place in a one-to-one (1:1) setting and/or group setting, based on the individual’s areas of need.
Speech and language therapy services for individuals with ASD include evaluation, intervention, and measurement of outcomes by using a wide range of tools and interventions, ranging from toys and play-like therapy to formal tests and speech curricula throughout their treatment session. Speech and language therapists collaborate and work as part of comprehensive, clinical team of providers in conducting developmental and educational assessments and serve as part of a child’s/student’s treatment team.
Occupational Therapy and Sensory Integration
Occupational therapy intervention helps individuals with autism develop or improve appropriate social, play, learning, community mobility, and sensory integration skills. The OT practitioner aids the individual in achieving and maintaining normal daily tasks such as getting dressed, engaging in social interactions, completing school activities, and working or playing. Furthermore, they evaluate an individual’s ability to determine whether he or she has accomplished developmentally appropriate skills needed in such areas as grooming and play or leisure skills and provide interventions to help a child appropriately respond to information coming through the senses. Intervention may include developmental activities, sensory integration or sensory processing, and play activities. OT’s collaborate and work as part of comprehensive, clinical team of providers in conducting developmental and educational assessments and serve as part of a child’s/student’s treatment team.

Counseling
The cornerstone of change for an individual or family affected by any adversity is trust in the process of change. In most cases, families and individuals approach the counseling experience with much trepidation. Social stigma and the significance most cultures place on self-reliance and privacy are often the initial barriers to accepting therapeutic intervention.
Relationships, communication and parenting are a few of the skills we, as humans, are expected to excel at naturally, without any formal education or guidance. The coaching and emotional support of a therapeutic relationship can help family members manage these struggles. The “cognitive behavioral” therapy approach is often used in counseling whereby the therapist helps the client to understand the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Once this is established, the therapist can further support the client in changing maladaptive thoughts, thereby changing the connected feelings and behaviors.
